My Story
Dirk's story is a compelling narrative of innovation, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of enhancing our world through technology and education. His journey begins in the early 2000s, where, as a student of material science at the University of Groningen, Dirk was already delving into the complexities of material surface changes under tension. This early interest in the intricate dance between materials and forces set the stage for a career marked by curiosity and innovation. Dirk's academic pursuits were complemented by internships that spanned the gamut of engineering, from mechatronics to solving electromagnetic problems with Thales Nederland. Each experience added layers to his understanding of how technology interacts with the physical world, an understanding he would continue to expand throughout his career. By the early 2000s, Dirk had entered the professional world, bringing his expertise in acoustics to Adviesbureau de Haan and later, to Antea Group Nederland. Here, he consulted on environmental noise for governments and industries, shaping the acoustic landscapes of towns and industrial settings alike. His work not only minimized noise pollution but also enhanced the quality of life for communities and workers, blending his technical acumen with a deep commitment to societal wellbeing. Dirk's passion for research and development found a new outlet in 2006 at Apollo Vredestein, where he spearheaded the Research department's initiation. Leading multi-disciplinary teams, Dirk was at the forefront of noise and vibration research, pushing the boundaries of tire technology and setting up groundbreaking collaborations with universities and consortia. However, Dirk's ambition wasn't confined to corporate or academic walls. In 2015, he founded Buitengewoon Twente, marrying his love for the outdoors with his entrepreneurial spirit. This venture into the outdoor company focused on product development, such as the Mobile Business Meeting Home, showcasing Dirk's ability to innovate across different sectors. The establishment of TValley in 2016 marked another significant milestone in Dirk's career. As a founder, Dirk fostered collaborations among knowledge institutions, companies, and governments in mechatronics, robotics, and smart industry, driving technological advancements in the region. Dirk's return to academia as a Professor (lector) at Saxion in Mechatronics & Systems Engineering allowed him to shape the next generation of engineers. Leading public-private R&D projects and connecting with a vast network of external partners, Dirk played a pivotal role in integrating academic research with real-world applications. In 2019, Dirk's entrepreneurial journey continued with the establishment of Bekke & Co, an innovation management bureau. This venture underscored his commitment to fostering technological innovations from conception to prototype and beyond, building new communities around unique value propositions. Dirk's latest venture, Nimo Drone Security, co-founded in 2021, is a testament to his visionary approach to using technology for enhancing security. By developing the SpiderControl security concept, Dirk and his team have redefined the efficiency of security professionals through robotic innovations, solidifying his status as a leader in technological innovation. Throughout his multifaceted career, Dirk has not only contributed to significant advancements in mechatronics, acoustics, and robotics but has also dedicated himself to educating and inspiring the next generation. From his early days as a teacher at Praedinius Gymnasium to his current role as a module instructor in Innovation Management at TSM Business School, Dirk's story is one of relentless pursuit of knowledge, a deep commitment to societal improvement, and an unwavering dedication to innovation.
